New Guide: Rethinking Pole Condition Data - Texas Edition

We’ve published Rethinking Pole Condition Data: From Pole Inspection to Pole Intelligence: a Texas edition guide for utilities reviewing how their pole inspection programs are structured. The Texas framing reflects current regulatory attention there, but the questions it works through apply to any utility in North America and worldwide managing a wood pole population.

HB 144 and SB 1789 have brought renewed attention in Texas to pole inspection, management and structural integrity, which makes it a reasonable moment to look at what additional technologies can contribute alongside an existing program.

The guide works through stress-wave propagation in plain terms: what it is, how a measured response relates to structural condition, how the Pole Health Index is derived from Bending Moment Capacity, and what becomes possible once condition measurements are comparable across a pole population, ranking, prioritisation, condition history, and indications of where within a pole an issue may sit.

It closes with five questions worth asking about any pole inspection program, whatever technology it uses.
